BIO: Tim Dunbar

Tim Dunbar was born in a snowbank in South St. Paul, Minnesota, and was raised by a family of ferel cats. He attended South St. Paul High School where he graduated with future Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty, with whom he shared a first name.

After watching the disc jockies at KDWB do their job live at the Minnesota State Fair and becoming enthralled with the big, spongy thing at the end of the microphone, he was hooked. “I told one of the guys there [at the fair] that I wanted to be a disc jockey when I grew up, and he said I couldn’t do both. I knew then that I had found my life’s calling,” Tim said to the non-existant writer doing this interview.

Tim graduated from Brown Institute in Minneapolis and set off on what would amount to (up to this point) 28 years in the radio business.

He started his career at WIZM in LaCrosse, Wisconsin and had stints at WSPT in Stevens Point, and WRKR in Racine, Wisconsin and KROC-FM in Rochester, Minnesota before deciding it was far too cold to live in the midwest. Having realized he was, as he likes to put it, “free to leave,” Tim, like Horace Greeley, Davy Crocket and the Donner party before him, headed west.

Tim took a program director job in Windsor and worked for nearly every radio station in Northern Colorado before being offered a job at a station in Denver named after a red, bushy-tailed carnivore. After five years of working the “daylight-impaired shift” (where he also did a short-lived talk show on their sister station, the one with only three call letters),

Tim went to work for another station in Denver, this one named after the long-taloned, feathered Accipitrinae, where he did the 7-midnight shift for five years.

Somewhere along the line, in one of those moments that can only be described as “insane,” Tim left the beauty of Colorado and returned to the midwest, this time to the Lake Michigan shores of Milwaukee, where he was promotions director for HOT 102. The insanity lasted only two years; in a moment of clarity, and a severe jonesing for the mountains, Tim Dunbar returned to the Mile High City, this time to stay.

Years later (after receiving a college education and dabbling in the world of, ugh, newspapers), Tim returned to the Denver airwaves on 92.5 THE WOLF.

When not mashing buttons on the big flashy control board at 92.5 THE WOLF, Tim enjoys cooking, writing, bulking up his DVD collection, quoting lines from “Grosse Point Blank” and chasing his cats Todd Rundgren and Leroy Boy off the kitchen counter. He is also an instructor at the Denver campus of The Ohio Center for Broadcasting.
