Dear Jesse & Shotgun..

My husband and I adopted our son in November of last year. Adoptive families have many different reasons for adopting but our was because we both felt a strong urge to change the life of one child living in this country.  There are over 500,000 American children who need to find forever families and somewhere to call "home."  We knew we had enough in our hearts to give one child the chance at having food, shelter and 2 loving parents.

We got a call from our adoption agency saying there was a little boy that was due and they were desperately trying to find him a family fast!

All the adoption agency shared with us is that the birthmother was pregnant, homeless and had already lost custody of her 10 year old son because she could not provide for him.  She did not believe in abortion but she knew she could never care for a new baby.  Like most people, I quickly drew a picture in my mind of what "homeless" looked like.  I'm even guilty of the stereotypes and judgements of what "homeless" really means.

Within 48 hours of the phone call this nameless, faceless, homeless woman made the bravest decision of her life and selected our family to adopt this precious baby boy.  I spoke to her once on the phone and them I met her the day our son was born.  I was blown away by how intelligent, funny, kind and so very human she was.

She had been a teacher so she was somewhat educated and somewhat traveled.  A truly well rounded person.  Nothing like the panhandler I had envisioned that sits at I-25 and Broadway everyday.  It was at this exact moment that I learned one of the most valuable life lessons I ever would.  We are all..every single one of us...ONE bad decision or one unfortunate circumstance away from losing the life we know.

Our son's birthmother had lost custody of her 10 year old because she had no where to go and no way to provide for him.  I saw myself in her.  I knew that could be my family with one stroke of bad luck.

So every night, I go home to my precious baby boy and I thank God that I can provide for him.  I thank God he's not living in a homeless shelter and I thank God he's not being bounced from couch to couch.  But I want to make something very clear.  Being his mother is not a right, it's a privledge.  And with that privledge comes responsibillity to teach him (by example) to always give back.  To always help when he can and to never judge anyone who cannot do for themselves or needs a little help.

I am urging every adoptive parent, every parent period who can walk into a store and buy your child food.  I urge you to call and make a donation to Feed The Children in your child's name.

My name is LeeAnn Sommers and my son Roman Michael is 101 days old today.  In his honor, I am donating 101 dollars to Feed The Children.  I personally urge you to do whatever you can.  But do it in the name of your precious child and let's be the example of what our kids can look up to and feel proud of.

Best,
LeeAnn Sommers
